Patriot Review By Lee Puddefoot Akira are steaming on with their fiery brand of post-apocalyptic rock. Their sound fuses various styles that creates the impression of a more accessible God Speed! You Black Emperor or Fugazi. The majestic soaring guitar and rousing bass combine to form a cerebral and theatrical attack on your senses. The only boundaries that Akira are forced between are the limitations of their experience, but despite this they create one of the most intense and experimental sounds currently doing the rounds on the underground circuit, and thus making them an exciting prospect. New single ‘Patriot’ opens with a foreboding voice murmuring “there’s a bug in my head, built out of lead, killing the pain and keeping me sane, there’s a leech in my heart and its coming apart, sucking me dry and helping me die” before the shrieking guitar cuts in and the shotgun drumming whips the song up into a manic rush. All three band members sing over each other to create a claustrophobic and eerie sound, bass player Gbenga deep and soothing baritone gently rumbles along and is lifted up by drummer Sarah’s sweet voice before guitarist Joel screaming and horrific vocals tears through the air like an insane banshee. The distorted guitar solo’s swoop in and twists around the bass parts making it almost suffocating, and with experimenting there are always going to be ups and downs. This is where the second song ‘Atom’ doesn’t quite reach the same dizzy heights as the a-side or previous efforts, but it does show that they are bursting with ideas and if they get the opportunities to harness the abstract impressionism that litters through their music they could be something truly remarkable.
