Patriot Review

UK Music Search
By Mike Bond

Akira make some of the messiest guitar noises heard in a long while, this is a band that make early Sonic Youth sound like The Beatles, Flipper sound like The Monkees. Perhaps closest, sonically at least, to Seattle slow core noise merchants Earth - Akira dredge up the same ear drum damaging sonic maelstroms, though its got to be said, do them a lot more succinctly.

Latest single PATRIOT isn't going to be troubling any daytime radio schedules, a schizophrenic guitar scrawl set against shifting drum patterns, and vocals that career between agonising screams and creepy nursery rhyme chants.

The flipside, ATOM opts for blending reverb drenched spaghetti western guitar riffs, disturbing sonic dissonance and a baritone croon - something akin to the Aphex Twin collaborating with The Delgados, conducted by Ennio Morricone.

A refreshingly noisy and chaotic affair, Akira make the kind of music that restores your faith in the underground spirit.
